On 22nd October 1940, William put his age up by 2 years and enlisted in the Citizen Military Force. He was a part of the 5th Motor Ambulance Convoy and served as part of the Ambulance Service which operated throughout the south west of Western Australia.
After serving for a little under 2 years in the CMF, William was called up for the AIF on the 6th August 1942. He served as an ambulance driver with the 5th Light Field Ambulance.
William described his service in these letters to the Central Army Records Office in 1975 and 1989.
