Gordon and the rest of the 2/4th Machine Gun Battalion reached Singapore on 24th January, 1942 and were immediately involved in the defence of Singapore. One third of the Battalion were wounded, missing or killed by the time of the surrender of Singapore on 15th February, 1942 and Herbert and his brothers were taken prisoner. He was executed on 11 February, standing alongside his brother, Herbert.
