At the Drill Hall on Sunday morning last the opportunity was taken by members of the V.D.C. to make a presentation to their leader, Mr H.L. Evans, who has been called up for military duty. Mr Jim Dodds, on behalf of the Unit, presented Mr Evans with a case of pipes and a tobacco pouch as a token of appreciation for the valuable work he had put into the movement since its inception and in doing so expressed a wish that Mr Evans would meet with much success in his new duties. ... Mr Evans entered camp on Monday. Mr Jim Dodds has been appointed leader of the York unit.

Friday, January 16, 1942
The York Unit of the 'Home Guard' have arranged through their Corps Headquarters, Perth for an educational evening comprising talkie films to be held in the Town Hall on Friday, January 30th. The programme will include the V.D.C film "Observation and Recording"; "Should Death Descend"; deals with incendiary bombs; "Light Rescue Party" for A.R.P.; "Control of Bleeding" to first aid; "Churchill's Island" and "Now You Are Talking" make up an interesting and educational evening. A cordial invitation is extended to the general public including all who are interested in Home Defence, A.R.P, First Aid or other Nations Service Units. Admission is free.

A parade of members of the V.D.C. Home Guard will be held on the Show Grounds next Sunday morning, January 25th, at 10 o'clock. Please bring your rifles.

Friday, February 27, 1942
In the event of an air raid on York and the dislocation of the water supply service it would be necessary in order to subdue fires to pump water from the river. On Sunday next at 10 am the York Fire Brigade will give a practical demonstration of the ability of their equipment to perform this task satisfactorily. The demonstration should be most interesting to the Home Guard and citizens of this town who may be called upon to assist in the case of an emergency.

The local V.D.C. unit had a rather busy time on Sunday last when a full day parade was the standing orders. After roll call members visited the rifle range for various exercises.

Friday, April 10, 1942
An interesting outing was spent at the Drill Hall on Sunday morning last when several members from Northam V.D.C. were in attendance and gave interesting lectures on weapons of warfare and as the guns were brought over for demonstration purposes the morning proved most enlightening. The Thompson sub machine gun proved popular with most and for a small piece of mechanism certainly has much value. The working of this gun and its ability were outlined by Lieutenant Evans. The Lewis machine gun was demonstrated by one of our local Section Leaders in Archie Wiseman, and he more than proved that he has lost little knowledge of this devastating gun since the 1914-18 campaign. Members were given an idea of how to use respirators in the event of gas being used by R B James, C O of the Northam Unit. After lunch had been partaken of the afternoon was taken up with more strenuous work.

The strength of the Volunteer Defence Corps has been doubled in the past four months. Methods of training and the functions the V.D.C. would be called upon to discharge in the event of invasion were decided upon at a weekend conference between the Commander-in-Chief of the Allied Land Forces in the SW Pacific (General Sir Thomas Blamey) and the V.D.C. leaders from all over Australia. This was announced on Monday by the Minister for the Army (Mr Forde) who said that the corps was well practised in guerilla warfare. For operational purposes the corps would be controlled by army and divisional commanders in areas where attacks were launched. Believing that the V.D.C. would have an important role in the defence of Australia the Government had decided to appoint a large number of full-time officers. Some had held positions in the corps, but others with experience in the Great War had been drafted from the militia. Mr Forde said that supply preference was being given corps members in vulnerable areas and there was a marked improvement weekly in the equipment and uniform position.

All members of the local unit of the V.D.C. are requested to parade in ordinary dress at the Drill Hall at 5pm on Friday, August 28th. Members will be addressed by Brigadier T E Meares, O.B.E., director of Volunteer Defence Corps in Australia and Brigadier A J Bessel-Browne.

Friday, September 4, 1942
Quite a good representation of the Dangin contingent of V.D.C. members (about 20) travelled to York, under the leadership of Platoon Commandant H P Walker, on Friday last to be present at the special parade inspected by Brigadier E T Weavers, Director of V.D.C. Allied Forces, Melbourne. He was accompanied by Brig-General Bessell-Browne, retiring commander of the corps.
