Phyllis volunteered for the Women's Land Army in 1942 and worked on De Vatimo's Tobacco Plantation and then Kingston Dairy Farm and Orchard. After completing 12 months service she enlisted in the Australian Women's Army Service. She successfully completed a Driver's Course and was posted to the Signals Corps in Stuart, Queensland.
