Stirling joined the 16th Battalion Cameron Highlanders in 1937 when it was a militia unit and remained with the Battalion when it became part of the AIF and carried out garrison duties throughout Western Australia. He was posted to the 8th Infantry Battalion and wrote this diary while stationed in Bouganville.
