William Stone was the son of the Advocate-General of WA, Mr Alfred Stone. William began working in Western Australian government positions from the age of 17 and held positions in the Convict Department, Postal Department and Stores Department. He joined the Fremantle Rifle Volunteers as soon as they formed in 1862 and then was a member of the Union Troop of WA Mounted Volunteers when they began in 1870. The Troop changed its name to the WA Troop of Horse Artillery in 1872 and William received his commission as a Lieutenant in 1874. In 1882 the Troop changed its name again to the Perth Artillery Volunteers and William continued as a Lieutenant with this group. In 1887 there was another name change and William's Troop became the No 1 Battery, Field Artillery. William was commissioned as Captain in 1894 and eventually rose to the position of Major.
