1951 First marching out parade held at Portsea, Victoria, Australia.
1953 These two girls, Vi White of Corrimal, South Coast, New South Wales, and Valma Wood of Bunbury, Western Australia are members of the Royal Australian Army Nursing Corps, and are at present stationed at the British Commonwealth General Hospital at Kure, Japan. When they had an afternoon off recently they paid a visit to the city of Hiroshima, scene of the atomic bomb explosion, and beside the Hiroshima Industrial Hall, which is being preserved in its damaged state as a memorial, they found the bomb souvenir shop of Mr K Kikkawa. Mr Kikkawa is a badly scarred victim of the bomb, who was made famous by Life magazine. Here the girls examine a sake bottle which was fused by the bomb. They later bought photographic books of the city which Mr Kikkawa autographed for them.

1953 Esme Cairns, T Wilson
1953 At one of the many attractive souvenir shops on the island of Miyajima, in the Inland Sea of Japan, Pte Esme Cairns of Brisbane and her fiance, Pte "Tug" Wilson of Middle Swan, Western Australia, select some wood carvings with which to decorate their future home. Esme and "Tug" first met at the military camp of Kapooka near Wagga Wagga in New South Wales. They met again in Japan where Esme is a member of The Royal Australian Army Nursing Corps.
1953 H L Newey, P J Healey
1953 Picking out flowers for the ward from a "Momma-san" flower seller is one of the pleasanter morning duties for these two nurses. Members of the Royal Australian Nursing Corps, H L "Flo" Newey of Camp Hill, Brisbane, and P J "Pippy" Healey of Queenstown, Tasmania are stationed at the British Commonwealth General Hospital at Kure, Japan. Both these girls have been in Japan for a while now and Flo in particular has travelled widely throughout the country. Pippy has only Tokyo, Hiroshima and Miyajima in her "places seen" book at present and of the last named resort she says, "It's the most colourful place I've ever seen." They're both enjoying their stay overseas, but like all Aussies abroad, they'll be glad to see home again.
1953 With a day off from her nursing duties at the British Commonwealth General Hospital in Kure, Japan, Cpl V G "Ned" Kelly took a trip down to Hiroshima, ten years ago the scene of the first atomic bomb explosion. Goldfish are popular in Hiroshima and "Ned" showed great interest in these finny fellows shown to her by the proprietor of a small shop. Cpl Kelly, who comes from 238 Dunbar Street, Stockton, New South Wales, has had a lot of nursing experience in Australia, having travelled in this profession from Stockton, through the North Coast, South Coast and Irrigation Area of New South Wales and through Healesville, Brisbane, Melbourne and Mildura. Apart from her hobbies of reading, fishing and hiking, her favourite sport is basketball and she once gained a "C" Grade trophy in the Basketball Association of Newcastle. Almost an "old hand" in Japan now, she has visited Eta Jima, Miyajima, Kure (that's now home base), Hiroshima, Hiro and Iwakuni.
1953 Lorraine Read, Rona Cooper
1953 Even though in uniform they're still clothes conscious, and these two girls are entranced by the colourful array of materials put forward for their approval by kimono clad Japanese shopkeeper. The lasses in uniform are members of the Royal Australian Army Nursing Corps, and they're stationed at the British Commonwealth General Hospital in Kure, Japan. They are Lorraine Read of Gnarwarre, via Geelong and Rona Cooper of Earlville, Cairns. Lorraine was working on a farm before joining the Army and Rona was a receptionist in a photographic salon. Both girls have made the most of their Japanese posting and have visited most of the big scenic attractions. However, they'll still be happy to see the shores of Australia once again.
1953 Lorraine Read isn't pandering to this panda. She's just going to buy him as a gift for a small relative back home in Australia. Lorraine, who comes from Gnarwarre, via Geelong is a member of the Royal Australian Army Nursing Corps, stationed at the British Commonwealth General Hospital, Kure, Japan. When off duty she divides her time between visiting the scenic attractions of the East and searching for suitable gifts to send home to friends and relatives in Australia.
1953 In a typical old-world Japanese garden setting, these four girls, members of the Royal Australian Nursing Corps in Japan spend a few hours off-duty. These girls are stationed at the British Commonwealth General Hospital, Kure, which was once a hospital for the Imperial Japanese Navy.
1953 Marjorie Orr, Ted Smith, Kevin Hayes
1953 Rather a novel experience for Nurse Marjorie Orr of Brisbane for her patient, Cpl Ted Smith of Hawthorne, Victoria is also on the staff for the hospital. He's a member of the Royal Australian Army Medical Corps, while Marjorie is in the Nursing Corps. They're both at the British Commonwealth General Hospital in Kure, Japan. Marjorie, who was a clerk before joining the Army, is engaged to another Army member, Signals Corporal, Kevin Hayes who at present is in Melbourne. Marj will always have happy memories of Japan because that's where she met her fiance.
1953 Andy Ingram, Gladys Devine, Rona Cooper
1953 Two girls on leave in a big city like Tokyo need an escort to show them around, and these members of the Royal Australian Army Nursing Corps found a willing guide in Korean veteran Cpl Andy Ingram of Camramatta, New South Wales, who is posted at the British Commonwealth Sub Area in the Japanese Capital. The girls, who are on leave from the British Commonwealth General Hospital at Kure, Japan, are Pte Gladys Devine of Kyogle, New South Wales and Pte Rona Cooper of Earlville, Cairns. Tokyo is a big place and it takes a lot of walking to see even part of it on one leave, but with Andy's help the girls managed to fit in most of the scenic attractions.

1953 Four girls with an afternoon off. But this is a holiday with a difference. The girls are members of the Royal Australian Army Nursing Corps. stationed at the British Commonwealth General Hospital at Kure, Japan, and they're just leaving Hiroshima Station for a tour of the city, which shows few signs of the devastation of ten years ago. From Left to Right they are Pte Valma Woods, Cpl V G Kelly, Pt V White and Pte Rona Cooper.

1957 Quietly and without fuss, six Australian Army Nursing Sisters are proving daily that integration and efficiency can work and does work in Malaya. Working with their counterparts from the United Kingdom, The Queen Alexandra Royal Army Nursing Sisters, in the big British Military Hospital at Kamunting on the outskirts of the old garrison town of Taiping, North Malaya, the Australian Sisters perform a variety of tasks among the sick and hospitalized troops of England, Australia and New Zealand, as well as Gurkha and Malayan soldiers attached to 28 Commonwealth Independent Infantry Brigade Group. All these Royal Australian Army Nursing Corps Sisters at Taiping served previously with the Commonwealth Forces in Japan during the Korean War and thus having their second taste of working with an integrated force. As well as dispensing care and kindness to soldiers, the Sisters are called upon to nurse the wives and children of the troops and their duties take them north to Penang, where most of the Australian families live, or south east into the mountainous Cameron Highlands where troops are rested and given a climatic change from the monotonous steamy heat of the jungles. Here Sister P Klingburg of Riverton, South Australia, and Sister M Gilbert of Deniston, Sydney, help children of United Kingdom service families piece together a jigsaw puzzle.

1967 Four Army nursing sisters leave Sydney on Friday morning (May 5) for Vietnam. The sisters, all members of the Royal Australian Army Nursing Corps, will serve in Vietnam for 12 months with the 8th Field Ambulance at Vung Tau. They are the first Australian servicewomen to serve in Vietnam. Pictured are (from left to right): Lieutenant M F Ahern, stationed at 2nd Camp Hospital, Ingleburn NSW, (formerly of Leeton, NSW), Captain A M Pittendreigh, now stationed at 3rd Casualty Clearing Station Brisbane, (formerly of Manjimup, WA), Lieutenant T E Roche, stationed at 8th Camp Hospital Singleton NSW, (formerly of Goulburn, NSW), and Lieutenant C A Mealy, stationed at 7th Camp Hospital Kapooka, NSW (formerly of Port Augusta, SA). The sisters told the press at an interview that they were very excited about going to Vietnam. Captain Pittendreigh said that nursing the sick and wounded in Vietnam was a challenge to members of her Corps. The Minister for the Army, Mr Malcolm Fraser, said that the Australian Army nurses had played a significant part in tending the sick and wounded in every conflict in which Australia had been involved since the Boer War. "Their presence in Vietnam would provide additional skilled medical personnel and would assist in the rapid recovery of injured soldiers." he said.

1971 Just like one big happy family, this group was pictured having a day out at the Saigon zoo and botanical gardens. The party consisted of 13 children from the South Vietnam village of Hoa Long, and members of the 1st Australian Task Force Civil Affairs team. Accompanying them is Australian Red Cross representative, Miss Jean Debelle, of Adelaide. The Civil Affairs team, led by Major John Donohoe (right foreground), of Mosman, NSW, gave the Hoa Long youngsters their first outing at the zoo. In Vietnam it is important to make friends of any age.
