Samuel Foster joined the 3rd Yorkshire Regiment(Green Howards), British Army, in 1905. He served for 8 years in Africa, Egypt and India before asking for discharge and being placed on the Reserve list of his Regiment. He emigrated to Western Australia in 1913 and took up a parcel of land at Ongerup. When World War 1 broke out, all men on the Reserve List were recalled to their Unit. Samuel returned to England and joined the 3rd Yorkshire Regiment again. He was discharged on 31 March 1920 and returned to Ongerup.
