The 28th Infantry Battalion was raised in 1915 as part of the Australian Imperial Force and any photos and documents relating to the 1915 - 1919 period are on a different 28th Infantry Battalion page. The 28th Battalion (AIF) was disbanded in 1919.

The 28th Battalion was re-raised in 1921 as a part time unit of the Citizen Military Force based in Western Australia. It continued as such until the outbreak of World War 2 in 1939. Any photos and documents relating to this period are displayed on this page. In 1927 the 28th Battalion adopted the title of "Swan Valley Regiment" and in 1934 this was shortened to the "Swan Regiment". During World War 2, from 1939-1945, the Swan Regiment (28th Battalion) continued to serve in Western Australia, Northern Territory and then New Guinea.

A separate volunteer Battalion was raised to serve overseas with the 2nd Australian Imperial Force and named the 2/28th Infantry Battalion. Photos and documents related to this AIF Battalion are on the 2/28th Infantry Battalion page. The 2/28th Infantry Battalion (AIF) was disbanded in January 1946 and personnel either returned to civilian life or joined Citizen Military Force units.

From 1945 the 28th Battalion continued as part of the Citizen Military Force and amalgamated with the 16th Battalion.(also Citizen Military Force). In 1952 the 28th and 16th Battalions separated again.
In 1960 the 28th Battalion became a part of the 1st Battalion Royal Western Australia Regiment (1 RWAR).
In early 1966 another reorganisation took place and the companies that had originally come from the 28th Battlion were allocated to the 16 RWAR. A few months later they were reformed as the 28 RWAR.

From 1987 to the present year, the 28th Battalion has been a part of the 11th/28th Battalion, Royal Western Australia Regiment (11/28 RWAR).

If you are searching for a person whom you think served with the 28th, it would be prudent to search in all three places: 28th Infantry Battalion, 2/28th Infantry Battalion and 28th Battalion
