The 2/3rd Machine Gun Battalion was raised in June 1940. A Company was raised in South Australia, B Company was raised in Victoria, C Company was raised in Tasmania and D Company was raised in Western Australia. Each Company trained in their own State and the 4 companies came together on the troopship travelling to Palestine in April 1941. After the fall of Singapore, the Battalion was sent to Java. The Japanese attacked and the men were ordered to surrender on 9 March, 1942. The men endured three and a half years as Japanese Prisoners of War.

Lieut Colonel Lyneham presented an affidavit to the UN War Crimes Commission telling of the atrocities the men endured in the POW Camps. A nominal roll of the men captured and their ultimate fate was also prepared and can be read on this link.
