While serving overseas, James listened to the poems written by fellow soldiers and wrote them down in his notebook. The poets were Herbert Michael Murphy - NX36629 of 2/24 Field Park Company(RAE); Paul Edgar Buddee - WX6597 of 2/28 Infantry Battalion; Ray Vorton; Tassy Henry and a number of uncredited soldiers.
