On February 12, 1916, orders are sent from HQ that the 11th Infantry Battalion was to be split into 2 sections. Platoons with an odd number were to remain with the 11th Battalion and platoons with an even number would form the new 51st Infantry Battalion. 481 men and 10 officers transferred from the 11th Battalion and were joined by new reinforcements to take the 51st Battalion up to full strength.
Private HARRISON, George Frederick - 2813, W242712 writes his version of the split in his diary.
