Australian Imperial Force 1914 - 1918
A Division is made up of 3 Brigades, and each Brigade has 4 Battalions. Within a Battalion are 4 Companies (A, B, C, D). Each Company usually had 250-300 men which gives a Battalion size of 1100 - 1200 officers and men.
1st Division
1st Brigade: 1st, 2nd, 3rd, 4th Battalions. (original enlistments were from New South Wales)
2nd Brigade: 5th, 6th, 7th, 8th Battalions. (original enlistments were from Victoria)
3rd Brigade: 9th, 10th, 11th, 12th Battalions. (original enlistments were from Western Australia, South Australia, Queensland, Tasmania, Northern Territory)
2nd Division
5th Brigade: 17th, 18th, 19th, 20th Battalions
6th Brigade: 21st, 22nd, 23rd, 24th Battalions
7th Brigade: 25th, 26th, 27th, 28th Battalions
3rd Division
9th Brigade: 33rd, 34th, 35th, 36th Battalions
10th Brigade: 37th, 38th, 39th, 40th Battalion
11th Brigade: 41st, 42nd, 43rd, 44th Battalions
4th Division
4th Brigade: 13th, 14th, 15th, 16th Battalions
12 Brigade: 45th, 46th, 47th, 48th Battalions
13th Brigade: 49th, 50th, 51st, 52nd Battalions
5th Division
14th Brigade: 53rd, 54th, 55th, 56th Battalions
15th Brigade: 57th, 58th, 59th, 60th Battalions
8th Brigade: 29th, 30th, 31st, 32nd Battalions
Each Division had its own field artillery, trench mortar battery, machine gun battalion,
engineer battalions, pioneer battalion, signals, medical, veterinary and ordnance units,
pay section, mounted troops, cyclist company, supply column and ammunition park.
Men enlisted from all States and Territories in Australia into each Division.
Light Horse Brigades
1st Brigade: 1st, 2nd, 3rd Regiments
2nd Brigade: 5th, 6th, 7th Regiments
3rd Brigade: 8th, 9th, 10th Regiments
4th Brigade: 4th, 11th, 12th Regiments
5th Brigade: 14th, 15th Regiments
The light Horse had their own machine gun squadrons, field ambulances and veterinary sections.
Australian Corps Units
Artillery, heavy artillery, heavy trench mortar battery, tunnelling companies,
railway operating companies, mechanical transport companies.
Camel Corps
Existed in 1916 and 1917
1st and 3rd Regiments were Australian
2nd Regiment was British
4th Regiment was a mix of New Zealanders and Australians
had supporting units
