Geoff Edwards was captured on Crete and escaped from a POW camp at Sfakia. He was helped by the local Crete villagers and was able to make it to the Preveli Monastery. 78 men were evacuated from the Monastery on the 28th July, 1941, via submarine and were taken safely back to Alexandria.

Years later, Geoff expresed his gratitude to the people of Greece and the monks of Previli by building The Chapel of St John the Theologian and naming a large area of land near Margaret River, Prevelly.
