At our first camp in Egypt. Just before Xmas 1940. A cold night round a heater in our mess. Major Smith, Somerset, Mornson, Crisp, myself, Cuthbert, Josephs and Whiteside.
Very slouchy attitude but going on duty one morning at our first camp here-early in December.
Groups of elderly Arabs seated at entrance in Damascus Gate smoking hubble bubble pipes. You can see the awnings above.
The other side of our mess. Gramophone, His Majesty and the wardrobe which was discovered and brought to us, and on to our dining table where someone was ironing I think.
Another glimpse of a water wheel we sometimes visited.
Coming off night duty one morning last December. Subzy and self and haversacks, tin hats and a thermos and all our woollies. ** outside Alexandria.
Delivering the milk - Jerusalem
St George's Tower, Jerusalem
Mel in the dust. She is wearing her cellophane glasses. You can see the elastic strap over her cap and she is not really as far away from the buildings as she looks.
Wall of Jerusalem from Jaffa Gate to David's Tower.
A glimpse of some of the buildings in which we worked. The lake ahead, the sea in far distance, white sand, blue sky and water and yellow dust in foreground.
Watching the proceedings-travellers in the other car involved and gellahin who rushed to the scene.
Water carrier with goatskin filled
White, Vines, self, Hanna and Dalton at Whitey's corner of our tent.
More onlookers. One of the Arab ** in the middle in brown uniform with beige coloured reffijeh instead of white.
After afternoon tea one day at Carmel Bar, Haifa. Standing at edge of road with Bay of Haifa behind me.
That is me behind the book just wakened on N.D. by cup of tea but not looking my best so hid when photographer present. My haversack is beside the box full of N.D. needs, caps and dust glasses are hanging over the arm on top of my pockets and brush and comb, half one wardrobe is visible , other hidden
Inside the burrow-Vines, Padre, Jones, White, Josie and Mel.
Bathing appliances and receptacles. There was a little alcove through the one door you can glimpse outside where we did bathe.
At the window of the train on our way up on New Year's Eve. It was cold and we all have woolly scarves and gloves on. It is Whitey and Tinno you can see and I may be this side in the hat.
Our first camp over here- or a bit of it. Very pebbly ground. Our tents were down to the right.
After the downpour at our first camp here in December.
Our vegetable man on his arab steed.
One corner of our tent one morning when we had a party and a very polite table laid. One girl moved so is a bit blurred. Mosquito net rolled up over the bed.
Another view of the surgical ward at Qastina[2/1st Casualty Clearing Station]
I am sorry I look so awful but I seem to have sagged. However it gives you an idea of the other side of our mess. See the blankets which we put over the windows at night, rolled up at present. Vines is sitting on far table near the gramophone. D'Allon appears to be presiding at the tea table. Hanna is near me and Josephs on one of our settees. The flowers are thistles, such pretty things with purple bush and base very prickly too. The others near the tray are ordinary daisies I think.
Beach chairs and a glimpse of the sea from foreshore at Tel Aviv.
Sitting outside Nell's tent.
Our last function before we moved to our present home. Mess with our Officers. The snap is taken indoors at 8.30 pm or so, so if not perfectly clear you can't wonder. I am seen at far end on left, third from end. The CO is at the left hand of dining President and Han on his right, then Orme, Smith and Vines. Mel next to CO then Crisp and Whitey. No else clear enough for you.
At afternoon tea. ** missing on night duty. Nan, Vines and Mel with Maj Crisp and Capt Raine(QM) near piano.
Quite a heavy load on her head and a babe covered with net in her arms. On the road near the village of Qastina.
Before we left our last camp. Dinner at the Officers' Mess. Taken inside at night we are all in mess dress minus capes as it was so hot. I am of course, seven down the table on the left hand side. It was a most amusing meal.
One corner of our burrow at last camp - our mess.
Jerusalem taken from the top of the wall.
This is taken at the Officers' Mess one afternoon when we went there for afternoon tea. I am sorry but I always seem to miss out and not show myself to you. From left going round table to right are: Captain Stephens, Sulzberger, Whiteside, Melville, Captain Crisp, Hanna, D'Alton, Padre Forrest, Vines, Major Somerset, Josephs, Captain Officer and myself, I look as if I have glasses on but it is Bob Officers pips in a line. Mel or Whitey is taking the snap.
Investigating the damage. A good view of the white reffiyeh and the black agaal of the Arab headress.
Threshing hay in Palestine, one way.
Air raid drill, slit trench near Suneid, Palestine 1940
Our front door. Pardon the firewood and the bucket. I might have removed the latter had I known the photographer about.
On route to the desert on New Years Eve. Cuthbert, Han, Vines, self, Joey, Subzy
Hubble bubble smokers in old city, Jeruselem
Outside our mess. It was a suggestion that I sat where I did- don't you think it was rather unkind? It is an oleander growing on my left and a bouganvillea creeping up the post on my right. The entrance is rather dark but you can see the outline of our blockout at the door. The chairs are where we sit with coffee after mess and yarn till we are driven inside by mosquitoes.
Looking from Gethsemane across terraces of olive trees to Golden Gate. It is so surprising to see how these trees flourish in dry even stoney ground and just everywhere round Jeruselem.
Standing just outside the Wall of Jerusalem at St Stephen's Gate. My usual weird grin. Hanna, Vines, self and Whiteside.
A snap of an arab village. Huts are a mud colour and are made of clay and straw. Some of the walls seem to have stones incorporated too. A lot of thatched roof of mud and straw.
The actual thing. You can imagine our damaged mudguard, wheel, bumper bar on left side and the engine pushed back out of alignment.
One sunny morning in Alexandria. Some friends and a 2nd CCS Sister
A few of us one sunny morning leaning over the stonework round the harbour or water front just beyond the hotel. (not the fleet harbour). The girl on the left is the sister in charge of 2/CCS who was here for a time.
A street in the Old City, Jeruselem
A grass mat like some we have on our floors.
Looking very mournful waiting for our trucks to move on to our next camp. Rather a dull snap but taken at 7am.
St George's Hostel where we stayed in Jerusalem. The flowering shrub is a plumbago and was so pretty.
A poor one. The shadow is on my face. It was a rather sunny afternoon at Gezira Club, Cairo. No gloves on, were probably in my bag as we had been sitting on the lawn.
King David Street, Old City
In our mess one Sunday afternoon when we had visitors from the Battalion on the boat with us. Padre Fairlie Forrest is 6th counting round from me.
Sorry these prints are so bad. I sent some back but the negs have been damaged so can't do any better. They are a nuisance in these places. Reading your latest letter outside the tent.
An alleyway in the Old City, Jerusalem.
Presumed to be original olive trees from time of Christ in garden of Gethsemane.
A corner of our kitchen at the burrow with our Fowler stove and copper. Sorry nothing more visible.
After the flood at one of our camps before Xmas. The water in a dugout tent ward excavation.
The light is playing tricks. The flooded ward of which I told you, water nearly 3 feet high, steep banks at fare end have fallen in.
In our first Egyptian camp. Our mess-grass mats on hte floor, packing case for cupboard, ** over two forms for a settee etc.
via Dolorosa Old City. Two modes of travel.
Washing before entering mosque. Jerusalem.
In St George's Close looking from hostel verandah across at Bishop's Palace. Plumbago flowering on left of picture.
An Arab village or one corner of it. Small boy on donkey with basket balanced in front riding down towards our driver who had stepped out to call him. Prickly pear bushes down left hand side of path.
CCS on board Y2 on 14/4/40. A small one taken off the newspapers one I preferred to. Back-sulzberger, D'Alton, self, Melville, Hanna and Vines; seated Whiteside and Josephs.
On the balcony of our room at Casino Palace Hotel, Port Said. From left-sulzberger, Melville, Hanna, Whiteside, Josephs, Vines, D'Alton and self.
A glimpse of the River Jordan
One of the Palestinian Police at a gymkana recently.
Dome of the Rock Mosque at Omar.
A snap inside our mess tent at last camp one afternoon. Josie, self and Vinno with some lads to afternoon tea. Grass mats on floor. Treles lamp hanging up and you can just see one of the tapestries behind up pinned on tent wall.
A snap of my room, not very good but hard to take. Two prints of Cezanne on my wall but hard to pick out things as all too blurred. It is taken through the door and the window is beside the door. I have not mitred the corners of the quilt! The trunk and kitbag are on the floor on right of picture(hidden) and the bed is right up to side of room at head so you can get a good idea of size, Not too big but quite comfy.
