The 2/4th Machine Gun Battalion reached Singapore in January 1942. One third of the Battalion were wounded, missing or killed by the time of the surrender of Singapore on 15th February 1942 and the remaining men were held in Japanese POW camps for the next three years.
The 2/4th Machine Gun Battalion was raised on 19th November, 1940 and began their training at Northam Military Camp in Western Australia. On 12th July, 1941 they transferred to Woodside Camp near Adelaide in South Australia. In October, 1941 the battalion moved to  Winnellie Camp in Darwin, Northern Territory. On 31st December, 1941 the Battalion prepared to go to Singapore. They sailed to Sydney and then on to Fremantle, Western Australia. The battalion reached Singapore on 24th January, 1942 and were immediately involved in the defence of Singapore. One third of the Battalion were wounded, missing or killed by the time of the surrender of Singapore on 15th February, 1942 and the remaining men were held in Japanese POW camps for the next three years.<br>
