The 3rd Pioneer Battalion was formed in March 1916. It was trained as an Infantry Battalion and was required to carry out the light engineering tasks required for trench warfare as well as fighting as infantry. Many of the men in this battlion had been tradesmen prior to enlisting and were tasked with constructing trenches, road clearance, laying water and communication lines and manning anti-aircraft defences. D Company was raised in Western Australia and South Australia and travelled to  Melbourne to join the rest of the Battalion before sailing for Britain.
