May 29/18
Dear mother I cannot write at present
for myself but the Church of England Chaplain has offered
for to do so for me I arrived in this hospital yesterday
altogether I have been 14 days coming down from the
front lines were I was hit do not worry darling
mother because I was wounded in the head for
although a present I am partly paralysed in both
legs and one arm yet already there's signs of returning
sensations the doctor says there is no reason why
I should not get quite alright again you may
soon begin to look for me because the padre says
that he expects as soon as I am fit to travel I
will be sent home. I am in no pain at all
mother dear if you have heard of me winning the Military
Cross I am sure you were pleased your boy was a brave
chap in the time of danger I have received your
letters regularly and expect to get one or two any moment
as another mail is in but my letters have to come
down from the front regiment my fondest love
to all especially to you and father
From your loving son
Alf
All he was able
to write was Alf
