Private Stock from South Australia originally enlisted in the 10th Infantry Battalion, AIF, in Adelaide and was allocated the Service number 3492. He caught measles on the troop transport ship on the way from Adelaide to Albany, Western Australia. He was transferred to hospital in Fremantle and didn't sail with the main AIF fleet that left Western Australia. When he had recovered, he transferred to the 11th Infantry Battalion and was issued the new Service number of 4030.
