Richard enlisted on 23rd November 1939 as a cook and was posted to the 2/11th Infantry Battalion. He was captured in Africa on 30th May 1941 and held as a Prisoner of War at Stalag 344.
When he made it back to Australia in 1945 he allotted 6d per pay to the Red cross in thanks for the support he received while a prisoner.
