The 11th Battalion was raised in Western Australia in the first few weeks of WW1. The Nominal Roll listing the men who embarked at Fremantle on the 2nd November, 1914,and sailed on the transport ships "Ascanius" and "Medic" can be seen here.
Initially there were 8 Companies in the Battalion - A and B Companies were men from Perth; C Company was men from Midland and Leederville, Subiaco and nearby suburbs; D Company was men from Fremantle; W Company was for men from the towns in the South West of WA; F Company was for the Goldfields men; G Company was men from Geraldton, Northam and the Murchison Goldfields; H Company was for men from Albany and the other southern towns in WA. A.I.F. Nominal Roll - 11th Infantry Battalion

The 11th Battalion was one of the first battalions to land on the Gallipoli Peninsula on 25th April, 1915 and was finally withdrawn on 17th November, 1915. The 8th Reinforcements were the last group of men to be a part of the 11th Battalion's Gallipoli campaign.

This photo was taken on the steps of the Great Pyramid of Giza (Cheops) in Egypt on January 10, 1915. There were 1024 men in the original recruits for the 11th Battalion and 704 men marched to the Great Pyramid to have their photo taken. The missing 320 men were either sick (160 had fallen sick on the journey from Australia), on duty, in detention for discipline issues, or absent without leave. A few were unfortunately standing outside of the frame of the photograph. Many of the men in the photo have been identified through the WAGS 11Bn Project.
