In Western Australia so many men had enlisted to be reinforcements for the 11th Battalion, it was decided to transfer some of them to form part of the new 16th Battalion. This new battalion was 75% Western Australian and 25% South Australian recruits. The recruits all travelled to Melbourne for training and then sailed to Egypt.
